Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.

Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Players will gain the option to challenge particular calls made by the official, following the system already in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development follows just a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to review other decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Further Updates

A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
