Early Saturday, reports emerged of major blasts rocking Tehran, following claims from Israeli officials that it had carried out a preemptive strike.
Loud Blasts and Smoke Reported in Central Tehran
According to on-the-ground reports, two loud blasts were heard in the city on Saturday. Simultaneously, two plumes of dense smoke were seen billowing over central and eastern districts of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of these blasts indicates that this is a missile attack,” a media outlet reported, though it did not initially offer additional information.
Context: Rising Strains and Recent Events
The incident occurs against a background of sharply increased strains in the Middle East. Major events preceding this strike involve:
- US Military Buildup: A significant build-up of American warships in the Middle East, featuring the movement of carrier strike groups.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Recent talks between the United States and Iran on Tehran's nuclear programme concluded without a deal, with suggestions of more discussions planned.
- Public Statements: Before the strike, a senior US official had described Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued warnings regarding its missile program.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Reportedly, a time limit of 10 to 15 days had been presented to Iran to settle the atomic standoff or confront severe consequences.
Reaction from Tehran
In response to prior accusations, Iranian authorities had charged the US of spreading “big lies” about its missiles programme. They rejected assertions about weapons development and protest deaths as baseless.
These developments remains fluid, with further updates expected as the situation develops.
