Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for several hours when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations affecting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and close to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and participants so that such operations become not financially viable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
